The golden age of Elvis ended in 1958 when he was called into the
army. A film - GI Blues - based on his time in Germany, marked the
birth of a new Elvis: no longer rebel, but clean-cut all-American hero

In the Sixties,
following his
discharge from
the army, Elvis
appeared in
a string of
second-rate
musical films. His
recordings rarely
rose above the
level of middle-
of-the-road
ballads

In 1967 Elvis married Priscilla Beaulieu, the daughter of an army
officer. She was in her early teens at the time they met, and this
added to the air of scandal which Elvis generated through his
rock'n'roll act

Elvis's progress
from rock and

middle-aged
crooner and hero

America was

a weight problem
and gorging on
fast food and pills

commemorative stamp bearing his portrait, but Elvis Presley's one
true memorial is his music

Like all pioneers,
especially in the
arts, Picasso was
criticised by
traditionalists for
being too obscure
and too shallow.
Some critics of
the first major
Cubist exhibition
felt that Picasso's
abstracts were a
hollow sham,
expressing
nothing deeper
than a fear that
photography
would make
painters
redundant

The tortured-
looking distorted
figures of cubism
seemed to be
made for
Guernica,
Picasso's epic
condemnation of
war. Now the
critics saw the
point, and the
painting was
instantly greeted
as a masterpiece

Picasso stayed in Paris during the war years. His studio was searched by the Gestapo, because he was a known communist, and his work was denounced as degenerate
